Shiqiang’s research interests focus on flood risk analysis, floodplain sustainability, and spatial statistics and models. At large scale, he has accomplished a flood risk map of China based on historical flood records and biophysical/socioeconomic indicators, which was compiled in the Atlas of Natural Disaster Risk in China. Using the nighttime light data of the DMSP-OLS and the NPP-VIIRS, he has revealed a disproportional distribution of urban land in floodplains (ULF) and a rapid growth of ULF (more than 5 times from 1992–2015) in China. He has also revealed a fast population growth in China’s floodplain while this growth was influenced by flood experience of a large-scale flood in 1998 in the Yangtze River basin. At city scale, he has established a historical flood database using newspapers, survey data, and other ancillary data. He has also investigated the influence of environmental factors on pluvial flood occurrence. Additionally, he has assessed non-structural measures of urban-land pattern optimization and low impact development for reducing flood risk.
